FAQ 137
How often do I need to attend University?

All programmes at York St John have different timetables, and the amount of hours you spend in the University will vary depending on the modules you have chosen and your year/semester.

During term time, you must attend University regularly and participate in all activities and assessments for your programme.  The University has responsibilities to a number of bodies to ensure that you attend the programme on which you are enrolled, as well as a responsibility to you to make sure the appropriate and promised teaching and learning opportunities are available.

The University will only cancel timetabled classed in exceptional and unavoidable circumstances (e.g. staff illness).  If it is necessary to cancel a class, we will notify you promptly and make reasonable alternative arrangements in order to minimise disruption.

As a student at York St John you have a number of responsibilities:

  • You must ensure that your living and travelling arrangements allow you to fully engage with all aspects of your programme.
  • You must attend all parts of your programme.  The University will monitor your attendance and will report it, as required by funders and the UK authorities.
  • Employment and extra-curricular activities must be fitted around scheduled learning sessions.  They are not accepted as an excuse for non-attendance for any students.
  • You must cooperate with any arrangements for monitoring attendance.  If you fail to do so, for example by falsely reporting attendance, the University can and will take disciplinary action.  On programmes leading to professional registration, failure to attend a placement without good cause may call into question your suitability for professional practice.
  • You are expected to be proactive in addressing any difficulties you may be having which affect your participation.  YSJ offers a wide range of support and you are expected to take the initiative to access these services.
  • If you have a disability that potentially affects your participation, you should speak to the Disability Advice Team about how this can be included within your Learning Support Plan.  YSJ can make make appropriate reasonable adjustments (e.g. ensuring you can take short breaks if required).
