FAQ 161
How do I reference?

As you might already know, referencing is the proper acknowledgment of any sources you used in your work.  It’s your chance to give credit to the original author by stating who said what, where and when.  You should always provide a reference if you quoted, paraphrased or summarised another person's idea.

There are different styles of referencing available, so make sure you stick to the correct referencing style determined for your programme.  There are five referencing approaches used at York St John University:

  • Harvard
  • APA 6th Edition
  • MLA 8th Edition
  • MHRA
  • OSCOLA 4th Edition

You can find out more information about each style in our online referencing guides.
