FAQ 186
What support is there for student carers?

Caring for someone, even at a distance (for example providing emotional support or checking on their welfare by phone) can put additional pressures on you whilst you study.  Even though you may love the person you care for, these sorts of responsibilities can have an impact on your financial situation, wellbeing, academic attainment, relationships and career aspirations.

If you are a student carer York St John University has a dedicated contact person, our Student Widening Participation Adviser, who can offer a warm welcome or a friendly face, and help you access whatever extra support you might need.  They can help you access additional funding, help liaise with academic staff (for example if your caring role is impacting our attendance or academic work) and link you with other sources of support.

Research also shows a higher presentation of mental health difficulties and concerns about having to leave the course amongst student carers.  If you feel you need mental health support please contact our Wellbeing team for a chat.  The Wellbeing team chats can be booked online via their webpage.
