FAQ 202
Am I eligible for a Master's Loan?

A Master's Loan can help with living costs while you study a postgraduate master's course.

Funding for Master's Loans is different if you normally live in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Moving somewhere to study doesn't count as normally living there.

Whether you qualify for a Master's Loan depends on:

  • Your course
  • Your age
  • Your nationality or residency status

Your course can be taught or research based, and studied:

  • full time, lasting 1 or 2 academic years
  • part-time, lasting 2 to 4 academic years - no more than twice the length of the equivalent full time course
  • part-time for up to 3 years, where no equivalent full time course exists

For more information on the eligibility, please visit Master's Loans

Please note: You will not be eligible for an Adults Dependents' Grant, a Childcare Grant or Parents' Learning Allowance from Student Finance if you are studying a master's course.

If you're an EU national, but don't normally live in England you may be able to get a MAster's Loan for a master's course at a university or college in England.

What can I get?

  • £10,906, if your course starts on or after 1 August 2019
  • £10,609, if you course started between 1 August 2018 and 31 July 2019
  • £10,280, if your course started between 1 August 2017 and 31 July 2018

This will be a contribution towards your course and living costs while you're studying, and has to be paid back.  The loan will be paid into your bank account in three instalments during the academic year.  If your course lasts more than a year, the loan will be divided equally across each year of your course.
