FAQ 278
How can I help pay for my accommodation, bills and other living costs?

Your student loan will not always cover all of your accommodation and living costs, so here are a few things you can do to help your financial situation whilst at university:

Part-time Work

We do encourage you to pursue part-time work if you are able (and full time over the summer) as this will not only help you financially whilst you are studying but will also equip you with the work experience needed for graduates. The University has LaunchPad Online which advertises jobs within YSJ and York which is managed by the Careers & Placements team. You can register here

Interest Free Overdraft

Most students are eligible for an interest free overdraft through a student bank account.  This is not something we would encourage you to rely on too heavily, however, it does provide a safety net should you find yourself short of money.  We would would advise comparing bank accounts so you get the right one for you and the Money Saving Expert can help with this.

Student Funding Advice Team Drop-in

The Student Funding Advice Team’s drop ins take place each day (except Wednesday) and are there for you to speak to a Student Funding Adviser about any financial difficulties that you are experiencing. The team will be offering both in-person and online drop-ins and to find out more information, please visit Your Finances.
