FAQ 423
My course finishes before my tenancy ends, but I cannot afford to pay council tax. What should I do?

Students are only council tax exempt for as long as they are full-time students. This means that if your course ends before your tenancy, you may receive a council tax bill. The university can produce a letter which confirms your course end date. If you need such a letter, your can request one through e:Vision. Please note that your official course end date will be different from your graduation date.

Students should seek the advice of the Council based on their situation. There is a webchat available on this page of the City of York Council website. The university cannot advise what you are eligible for, but you can ask the Council whether you are able to extend your exemption or set up a payment plan. There is also a discretionary exemption scheme which you can apply for on this webpage. Any decisions about your council tax bill are up to the Council. However, the Student Information Desk are available for advice if you need it.
