What happens if I have debt with the University?

During your time at York St John, we aim to support you fully in managing the financial aspects of your study and the Student Financial Regulations detail your full financial obligations to YSJ.

Tuition Fees

When you accept the offer of a place you make a contractual obligation to pay the fees charged by YSJ for the delivery of that programme.  You are personally responsible for the fees, even if payment will be made by someone else such as Student Finance England (SFE), a relative or a sponsor.  The University will try to accommodate the needs of its students wherever reasonable, so if you are having problems paying tuition fees, or any other mandatory costs, it is essential that you contact us as soon as possible to discuss any alternatives.

Should you fail to arrange alternative payment plans then York St John reserves the right to:

  • Discontinue your programme of study if you do not pay tuition fees by the dates specified
  • Require you to pay a proportion of tuition fees if you leave during the academic year
  • Stop you from re-enrolling to continue a programme of study if you have outstanding tuition fee debts for that programme
  • Refuse to admit you to a degree ceremony or release your degree certificate or any letter of confirmation of award until any tuition fee debt is paid

Accommodation Fees

You will be notified of your accommodation charges at the start of the academic year, and for your convenience we offer you the option of paying for your accommodation by direct debit in 3 instalments, or by credit or debit card.  If accommodation fees remain unpaid and you do not make an agreement to pay, or your arrangement to pay fails, administration charges may be raised as follows:

After seven days                 £20.00 charge

After fourteen days            £20.00 charge

After twenty-one days        £10.00 charge

If accommodation fees remain outstanding for longer than this, you may be required to appear before the Student Finance Review Panel, which reserves the right to begin eviction proceedings.  No student with an outstanding debt with YSJ is permitted to apply for University accommodation.

For all debts the University reserves the right to engage a debt collection company to chase outstanding debt and to add associated legal costs.
