What is assistive technology?

Assistive technology (AT) is any item, piece of equipment, software program, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of persons with disabilities.  AT can be as low-tech as communication boards made of cardboard or fuzzy felt, or as high-tech as special purpose computers and software such as screen readers and communication programs.  At YSJ, the term assistive technology is usually used in reference to specialist software which may or may not be funded through DSA.
