FAQ 211
Can the University help me find private accommodation?

Yes we can. Please head to our 'Accommodation After First Year' webpage for all of the information you will need.

We prioritise accommodation for first year undergraduates, so that we can ensure students living in York for the first time are fully supported in their transition to university life whilst getting to know a new city.

There is a very limited amount of accommodation available for returning students who meet a specific set of criteria (section 9 of the Allocation Policy). Students will be invited to register their interest to return in semester 1 and they will be asked to demonstrate how they meet the criteria as part of this process.

All applicants will be considered on a case by case basis by a panel of Student Lifer representatives.

When should I start searching for my next house?

From November time the private student letting agencies will begin to advertise their properties. Therefore, in the run up to this period we would advise that you start to think about where you would like to live next year and who with (if anybody at all).

There are a variety of private options in York but the key is to start looking as early as possible so you have enough time for house viewings.
