FAQ 271
How do I apply for Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA)?

Applying for Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) can be quite a complicated and lengthy process, so it's a good idea to get started as soon as possible.  Your first step is to look at the DSA information on the Government website to find out about the application process, and speak to the YSJ Disability Advisers who will be happy to help guide you through this.

You will need to apply for DSA by completing the application form that is available on the Government website and then sending it to your funding body along with your supporting medical evidence.

If your eligibility for DSA is confirmed you will receive an approval letter and Student Finance England may then ask you to contact an assessment centre to work out what help you need.  This is known as a needs assessment and shouldn't be booked until Student Finance England asks you to do so.  The needs assessments are carried out on site at York St John by the Higher York Access Centre (HYAC) team and are simply a conversation between you and a specialist assessor to discuss your needs in relation to your course, and come up with some ideas about support and solutions.
